Diving in Key West
There are about 50 sites to dive around Key West unfortunately, not all with mooring buoys.  The sites range in depths from 20
to 120 feet.  Visibility usually is around 50-80 feet and summer water temperatures in the mid 80's, winter temps around 70.

Sambo's Reefs, the outer Reef and Ten Fathom Ledge are a few of the most popular dive locations.  Sambo reefs (Eastern,
Middle and Western) are on the main reef line which is Southeast of Key West.  A drop-off of 60-90 feet with steep ledges is at
the edge of the reef.  The Outer Reef and Ten Fathom Ledge are about a mile past the main reef line.  Patch reefs may be a
mile of two in length and have many hard and soft corals and sponges.  In the shallow waters, parrotfish, butterfly fish,
angelfish, stingrays, eels, nurse sharks and turtles are common.  The wall at the deeper end of the Ten Fathom Ledge drops
from 60 to 120 feet.

You'll find jewfish, moral eels, yellowtail, grunts, wrasse and barracuda at the wreck dive sites.

Snorkeling in Key West

More and more visitors are discovering that there is another category of diving that merits mention.  That is, skin diving or
snorkeling as its known today.

Snorkeling has been called the family sport of the 90's and snorkel gear is being sold everywhere.  They say "If you can swim
you can snorkel".  If you've never been snorkeling before, with some basic instruction you can soon be in the water observing
the
Florida Keys tropical fish and colorful, living coral and other reef creatures that help make up the underwater world of John
Pennekamp State Underwater Park,  Looe Key and countless other places up and down the Florida Keys.

Most of the dive shops in the Florida Keys offer snorkeling on their boats but they are primarily geared for the certified scuba
diver.  Those boats may go to the deeper areas of the reefs.   However several shops and boats do offer snorkel only tours and
these trips are geared for skin divers and go to the more shallow areas of the reefs.  On these tours you may find parents who
have been scuba diving for years introducing their young children to the wonders of the sea.  In the process they re-discover
what got them interested in diving in the first place. The thrill and freedom of floating over a living coral garden with only mask,
fins, snorkel and safety vest is hard to top!
